THE GIRL WITH A NEEDLE

PIGEN MED NÅLEN, Denmark, Poland, Sweden 2024, 123 min

11 awards at the Gdynia Film Festival, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Frog at the EnergaCamerimage festival, and two European Film Awards are just the most important laurels for this year’s most famous Polish co-production. “The Girl with the Needle” by Magnus von Horn is a masterfully constructed psychological thriller that looks into the darkest recesses of the human soul. It is a dark fairy tale for adults, in which we meet a poor girl, a noble monster without a face, a cowardly prince on a white horse and a witch who feeds milk and candy to children. The only thing is that this story really happened. Copenhagen, just after World War I. Karoline, a young factory worker, becomes pregnant and finds herself on the street overnight. When she meets Dagmar, the charismatic owner of an illegal adoption agency, who offers her shelter and work as a wet nurse, she finds herself in the middle of puzzling events. Will the relationship between the women, initially based on trust, hold up when confronted with dark secrets? How much can you forgive someone who offered you a helping hand at the most difficult time? Karoline and the audience will be forced to find answers to the question of the boundaries of right and wrong. The cinematography by Michal Dymek mesmerizes with dark beauty and draws the viewer into a suspenseful game. Agnieszka Glinska’s editing, as well as Jagna Dobesz’s set design and Małgorzata Fudala’s costumes, create a visual performance with a universal dimension.
