SHE CAME AT NIGHT
Are moms and mothers-in-law always right? Do they have good intentions toward us? And isn’t that why they are the scariest monsters of all? When a couple of thirty-somethings let the mother of one of them cross the doorstep of their home, they have no idea that they have just entered a claustrophobic purgatory. Their peaceful life is slowly transformed into a chaotic calamity. Valerie, a well-groomed woman in her sixties, is an energetic diva who gradually takes over not only the apartment’s space but also its inhabitants’ minds. As the home invasion gains momentum, their sense of security is shaken and their privacy boundaries are shattered. Are moms and mothers-in-law always right? Do they have good intentions toward us? And isn’t that why they are the scariest monsters of all? Walking the fine line between black humour and domestic horror, She Came at Night, a film by Jan Vejnar and Tomáš Pavlíček, explores a situation that each of us has experienced in one form or another.
In 2024, the film won two Czech Lions – for best director (Jan Vejnar, Tomáš Pavlíček ) and best actress (Simona Peková).
