THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG
One of the most important and acclaimed films of this year’s awards season. A Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, an Oscar nominee, winner of the Special Jury Prize and the unrivalled best-rated film of the Cannes Film Festival, winner of the Audience Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival and winner of dozens of other honours and awards. Hailed as an “absolute masterpiece,” it is as gripping, moving and engaging as the best David Fincher films.
Two adolescent sisters deal with school, friends, and household chores in their daily lives. Everything changes when their father – Iman is unexpectedly promoted to an investigative judge. Along with financial rewards and social advancement come new rules and responsibilities, and his family receives clear instructions from the authorities on what is expected of them. Their strictness and restrictiveness arouse opposition in the girls. Outside the home, the streets are alight with protests that exploded following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in 2022 while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly improperly wearing a hijab. Soon, Iman understands his role – rubber-stamping death-penalty judgments against activists without due legal proceedings. The atmosphere in the house becomes tense, and the situation is further aggravated when the father’s service weapon disappears. Overnight, the entire family finds itself in grave danger.
