Bohdan Sláma – He was born 29.05.1967 in Opava ( The Czech Republic). He graduated from the Prague Film School FAMU. In 1992 he assisted Věra Chytilová on the film Dědictví aneb Kurvahočigutntag. His directorial debut was the short film Garden of Paradise (Zahradka raje, 1994 ), which was screened at the Premiers Plans d’Angers Film Festival in the film school section. Sláma’s first feature-length film was Wild Bees (Divoké včely, 2001) – a portrait of a Moravian village and its strange inhabitants, which won numerous awards at international festivals (Rotterdam, San Francisco, Warsaw). His film Something Like Happiness (Štěstí, 2005) also won several awards . It’s a tender chronicle of a group of friends living in a gloomy industrial city, for which he was awarded, among others, the Czech Lion for direction and the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Festival. After his third feature film, The Country Teacher (Venkovský učitel, 2008), about a teacher from Prague who decides to teach in the countryside, a prestigious industry magazine Variety included Sláma in its list of 10 directors to watch in the world. Six Czech Lions (the Best Film, the Best Actress, the Best Actor, the Best Supporting Actress, the Best Director, the Best Screenplay) were awarded to his 2017 film, called Ice Mother (Bába z ledu). Sláma’s latest film – Shadow Country (Krajina ve stínu, 2020), chronicles the life of a small border village against the historical background in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The film received six Czech Lions (the Best Actress, the Best Supporting Actress, the Best Screenplay, the Best Editing, the Best Costumes and the Best Music). It also won a special award for the Best Poster. Bohdan Slama is a lecturer and Head of the Directing Department at FAMU.
