MASTERCLASS – PETR ZELENKA
Writer, director. Born 1967. He studied script-writing at the Prague Film School, FAMU 1986-1991. Between June 1990 and March 1991 he worked as a script editor at the Barrandov Film Studios, 1990 – 1996 four of his original television screenplays were produced by Czech Television.
FILMS:
“MŇÁGA-HAPPY END” (1996), his feature director’s debut, an award at the Cottbus Film Festival, Germany 1996 and The Golden Kingfisher of Pilsen Film Festival;
“BUTTONERS“ (1997), the film has became a major Czech cult film of the decade, winning many local and international awards: 4 “Czech Lions” 1997 (Czech Film Academy Award) – Best Film, Best Script, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor; Best Film at: Tiger Award 1998, Rotterdam FF, Bergamo (Italy), Art film (Slovakia); Sarajevo FF, Talin FF – Grand Prix, 2nd prize at: Thessaloniki FF, Cottbus FF, Lagow FF; VALLADOLID FF – FIPRESCI prize;
„LONERS” (2000), a film for which he wrote the script, directed by a friend David Ondříček. The film was released in April 2000 in Czech Republic and became the No. 1 box office hit of the year. It has won a couple od audience awards (Thessaloniki F.F, Warsaw F.F.);
„YEAR OF THE DEVIL“ (2002), main prize at: Karlovy Vary FF., Alpe Adria Cinema, Chanty-Mansijsk festival Spirit of Fire; 6 “Czech Lions” (Best film, director, sound, music, editor, box office, poster); „WRONG SIDE UP“ (2005), Prize of Russian Film Critics at Int. Moscow FF 2005; 2 “Czech Lions” (sound, best supporting actor); Bergamo FF award;
„KARAMAZOVS“(2008), FIPRESCI prize and Special mention at Karlovy Vary IFF 2008; 2 “Czech Lions” for the Best Film and Best Director;
„LOST IN MUNICH“ (2015), feature film about the film crew shooting a film about Edouard Daladier´s talking parrot, awards: Czech Films Critics prize for the best director, Czech Films Critics prize for the best scriptwriter, Czech Films Critics prize for the best film, Český lev (Czech Film Academy Award): Best Script, Český lev (Czech Film Academy Award): Best Editor, Film festival in Puna, India, Best film; Droneman (2020), (writer, director, producer), feature film about a young navigator who attempts to kill Dick Cheney with a drone. Story of love, friendship and politics.
Zelenka is also the author of many plays.
